E' una estensione degli standard 10Mbps Ethernet con la capacità di trasmettere e ricevere dati a 100Mbps, mantenendo il protocollo CSMA/CD Ethernet. Dato che 100Mbps Fast Ethernet è compatibile con tutti gli altri ambienti 10Mbps Ethernet, fornisce un upgrade diretto ed è sicuramente la soluzione migliore rispetto ad altri  investimenti in hardware, software e addestramento.
